A great gift for a child or the kid in all of us. Rawlings has created a wonderful world of characters. Having been an avid fantasy book reader (and AD&D; player) in my youth, I did find it a bit derivative of other books in the genre (ie. hapless young boy discover's he is a great wizard, warrior, king, jedi, etc.). And of course the books much better than the movie. I also recommend the audio book; very well voice acted by Jim Dale.

There are many great fantasy/magic series, for the young reader I would recommend J.R.R. Tokein's 'The Hobbit', Lloyd Alexander's 'Chronacles of Prydain' series, or Piers Anthony's 'Xanth' series.

The perfect gift for the Star Wars fan who has everything else. The book is well designed and cooking allows you to share the fun. My only regret is that I remember having a Star Wars activity book as a child that had a recipie for "Chewbacca Chewies" and they're not in this book.

While the book doesn't go into the story of Anakin Skywalker's past (the basis of the 3 prequels), it does fill in details from Star Wars through Jedi. My first and most favorite fantasy book, "The Hobbit" was actually intended to be a children's book. But then, Tolkein was an Oxford scholar of Old-English and Norse literature, so it's hardly sophomoric or simplistic. He practically created the genre with his groud breaking "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Needless to say, your library wouldn't be complete without it and dare I say it, it makes a perfect gift.

These are probably the best of the "post trilogy" books. Zahn creates a villain as evil and menacing as Darth Vader, in the form of Admiral Thrawn. And that is no mean feat. By far Crichton's best science thriller and it's amazing to think that it came out decades before "The Hot Zone", the discovery of AIDS, Ebola, and the slew of new scary diseases. I hear they're making "Sphere" into a movie. I hope they do a better job than they did with "Congo" or "The Lost World", not that they were great books to begin with. Though "Jurassic Park" wasn't a bad movie, though the book was better.

Originally written for a juvenile audience during the height of the Cold War. Set in a totalitarian future Earth at inter-stellar war with a race of insects. Heinlein is still my favorite Sci-Fi author though his writing seems (like a lot of Sci-Fi) a tad simplistic but then so is Tom Clancy. His later books offer more depth and are much more controversial and compelling; dealing with, incest, religion, and sex. Here are my favorites:

Friday : A genetically engineered courier of the future, as beatuful as she is smart and deadly. One of the first Sci-Fi novels to have a strong female protagonist.

Job: A Comedy of Justice : A hapless hero caught in a comedy of errors, God, Satan, Odin, Heaven, Hell, and alternate universes.

The Number of the Beast : Despite the tittle, this is not the Satanic bible, rather it is a tale of 4 high-tech adventurers hopping from one universe after another (even managing the Wizard of Oz), asking the question are we all just the charters in somebody else's novel?

Stranger in a Strange Land : This 60's counter-culture classic is the story of an earthling raised by Martians, who returns to Earth with Christ-like powers.

Time Enough for Love : The adventures of a 1000 year old man. Is sex with your clone considered incest?
