Galileo's Daughter : A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and
Love by Dava Sobel Hardcover Galileo didn't invent the telescope. But he did improve it, and was the first person to see and record the moons of Jupiter. There's a lot of things about Galileo that we've learned incorrectly or not at all, like the fact that he had an daughter, two in fact and a son. This is the story of Galileo, his life and his times, his triumphs and his bitter censure by the Catholic Church, told through the correspondence with his daughter Sister Maria Celeste. In Galileo's words, "a woman of exquisite mind, singular goodness, and tenderly attached to me." Order this book for the discounted price of $27 |

The Pinball Effect : How Renaissance Water Gardens Made the Carburetor
Possible-And Other Journeys Through Knowledge by James Burke, Mark Chimsky (Editor) Hardcover Since highschool I've been a fan Burke's television series Connections and The Day the Universe Changed. And like them, this book is an entertaining journey through the seemingly random connections, discoveries and personalities that create scientific and technological "progress". The Red Queen : Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley Paperback A fascinating book about the role of sex in human evolution. Why do men sleep around? Why are most lesbians monogamous? Why do men prefer blonds? While some of his theories could be considered sexist, Ridley makes the point that, sexual stereotypes create and are created by sexual selection. The Hot Zone by Richard Preston Paperback This book is so gripping and amazing, it reads like science-fiction. And with the lethal viruses it talks about, I kinda wish it was the "Andromeda Strain" and wasn't real. To think that a major outbreak (they based that lame movie on this book), of a potentially lethal and highly communicable form of Ebola happened a few years ago just outside of Washington D.C. It'll keep you up at nights. Order this book for the discounted price of $5.59 ~ |

The Demon-Haunted World : Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan Paperback Carl Sagan was one of my favorite authors, since watching Cosmos as a child. His writing made science accessible and friendly. This, his last book, is a collection of essays on his childhood, growing up and discovering science, and articles debunking UFO abductions, Astrology, and other pseudo-science. Here are other books he's written that I can highly recommend:

The Island of the Colorblind and Cycads Island by Olive W. Sacks Hardcover Like Sacks other books Awakenings, An Anthropologist on Mars and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, this book is a fascinating glimpses into the human mind. But unlike his other books, which deal with the lives of his patients isolated by neurological disorders, this book is about minds isolated by geography: Micronesian islanders and a strange neurodegernative disorder in Guam. A Brief History of Time : From the Big Bang to Black Holes by Stephen W. Hawking, Carl Sagan, Ron Miller Paperback For a while there, it seems like everybody had this on their coffee table, though I doubt most people who bought it ever actually read it. Pity because they missed a chance to read one of the most brilliant minds of our time, explain with simple clarity the biggest and most intimidating concepts of physics, cosmology, and time. And if you enjoyed this book, read Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays Order this book for the discounted price of $18.87 ~ |

Darwin for Beginners by Jonathan Miller,Tom Engelhardt,Borin Loon Paperback The funniest and easiest way to understand the basics of evolution and genetics. If only all Science books were made this way, I think I would have stayed in Biology...well and if it paid a hell of a lot more. My own personal copy I stole from an ex-girlfriend. You on the other hand can get this for a steal.

Chaos; Making a New Science by James Gleick Paperback Thankfully you don't need to remember much of your college or even high school math to enjoy this book. Though it will make you want to fish out our old text-books and maybe even think math is fun. Hey, it could happen. At the very least you can talk about fractal mathematics at parties and sound like you know what the hell you're talking about.
