If you want a better understanding of the origins of Militant
Islam and modern Egypt, this is your book. I was fascinating to
learn about the causes and connections between people like Sheikh
Abdel-Rahman and Bin Laden (the men who inspired the attacks on
the World Trade Center). All this from a book that was written
well before the events of 9-11. Order this book for the discounted price of $11.20
A Portrait of Egypt : A Journey Through the World of Militant
Islam
Mary Anne Weaver
Paperback
The events of September 11th, 2001 will forever be etched into
the minds of those who watched the horror, the images of destruction
and evil. It left many wondering, why? Why us? This book helps
anybody understand why the world is the way it is. Ambrose writes
history in a way that makes it captivating and relavent. It's
a good starting point in finding out more about our country, our
government, and the fact that we haven't always acted like the
'good guy' to other parts of the world. Like Pearl Harbor, Sept
11 was a hard reminder that we are part of the world, and living
in isolation and ignorance is no shield. Remember, those who don't
know history, are doomed to repeat it. Order this book for the discounted price of $12.76

Paperback
The big news right now is the DOJ and the anti-trust judgements
against Microsoft. One tends to think of Microsoft as a great
evil empire rulled by a brilliant mastermind named Bill Gates.
But as Marlin Eller tells it, from his many years at Microsoft
working from the early 80's, this is far from the truth. Microsoft's
Windows dominance was a matter of dumb luck and smoke and mirrors.
An interresting look at the Microsoft to be sure. Order this book for the discounted price of $16.10 ~
Barbarians Led By Bill Gates : Microsoft from the Inside

Cruise's Mission Impossible wasn't.

D-Day June 6, 1944 : The Climactic Battle of World War II by Stephen E. Ambrose Paperback After seeing Saving Private Ryan I was speechless. And when I found out that it was "based on a true story" from Stephen Ambrose's D-Day book, I just had to read it. Ambrose is one of the best military history writers around. In this book, he collects actual stories of from the soldiers who were there. And in their words it becomes all too real, like the opening scenes from the film.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand Paperback This book along with, "The Fountainhead" are seminal pieces of 20th Century literature dealing with the worth of the individual and the role of government and society. Both influenced me enough to rethink my political, economic, and social views. Though, I'll be honest, Rand's writing can often be bombastic, preechy, simplistic and not nearly as "intellectual" as people attribute, but it's still worth reading. The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff Paperback One of my favorite birthday gifts. I never knew that Winnie the Pooh was a Toaist master, but they this childhood character was always in touch with his inner bear. This book has spawned many imitators, but this is the best by far. Simple is best. Order this book for the discounted price of $9.56 ~ |

The Art of War by Sun Tzu Translated by Thomas Cleary Paperback "To win without fighting is best," Sun Tzu said. Written 2000 years ago by China's famous philosopher-general, it provides helpful strategies and insights that can be used in day-to-day life, business, deals, as well as on the battlefield. I think Bill Gates read this book.

Journey into Darkness by John E. Douglas, Mark Olshaker Paperback Chilling. A memoir by the former head of the FBI's "Profiler Unit", which specializes in creating psychological profiles of violent criminals. Like his earlier book, "Mindhunter", these are all true stories. It opens on a rape/murder as told from the killers mind. I was really creeped by it. And it ends with his profile of the Simpson/Goldman murderer based on the evidence. Guess who the most likely suspect is? Order this book for the discounted price of $5.59 ~ |

Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton Hardcover A translation of the "manuscript" of Ibn Fadian, a Persian ambasidor living in A.D. 922, of his experiences traveling and living with the Northman ("Vikings"). So interesting, I was fooled. It turns out that this is a fictional novel, written as a non-fiction translation. Based on Beowolf, Crichton manages an interesting and very original take on the "boring" classic. Order this book for the discounted price of $5.59 ~ |

Live from Golgotha/the Gospel According to Gore Vidal by Vidal Gore, Gore Vidal Paperback A wonderfully blasphemous, ribald and funny revisionist tale of the early Christian church. The Barrytown Trilogy : The Commitments/the Snapper/the Van by Roddy Doyle Paperback If you loved the films, then you should read the books that inspired them, because they're even funnier.
